Lady Hawks 2-0 in young season

The New Heights Lady Hawks opened the season posting wins over Long Middle School of Cheraw and Chesterfield/Ruby Middle School with both wins taking place on the road.

Last Wednesday, March 7 the Lady Hawks brought out their “whupping” sticks in Cheraw, banging out 12 hits for a 17-0 thrashing of Long Middle. Jazmyn Baker was the winning pitcher allowing one hit, two bases on balls and striking out nine.

The Lady Hawks’ hitting attack included Ashlyn Freeman with two hits, three RBI’s and two walks; Mikavla Krest with two hits and one walk; Jazmyn Baker with one hit, two runs and two walks; Stephany Pena with one hit, two runs and two walks; Daisha Funderburk with three runs and four walks; Rebecca Martinez, Shay McBride, Michaela Pressley and Logan Duvall with one hit and one run each; Shadell Harris with one hit, one run and one walk and Sakasia Blount one hit.

At Chesterfield/Ruby Middle on Thursdasy, March 8, the Lady Hawks trailed 1-0 entering the top of the fifth inning, but scored three runs to escape with a 3-1 win. Jazmyn Baker did not allow a hit, struck out four and gave up one unearned run.

Hitting safely for the Lady Hawks were Daisha Funderburk and Shadell Harris with one hit and one run each; Stephany Pena and Shay McBride with one hit each; Jazmyn Baker and Michaela Pressley with one hit and one walk each; Ashyln Freeman with two hits.

“It was an exciting game as we trailed 1-0, but we scored three runs to pull out a win,” Kim Brock, scorekeeper and wife of Coach Wesley Brock said. “Hopefully this will give us confidence in future games.”

The Lady Hawks will host Long Middle School Wednesday at Central High beginning at 5 p.m..
