Haigler receives academic honor

Cody Haigler, a seventh grader at New Heights Middle School was recognized by the Duke University Talent Identification Program last Tuesday, May 14 at Furman University.
Duke TIP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving academically talented youth. As a seventh grader Haigler was offered the opportunity to take the ACT based on his PASS test scores for the 2011-2012 school year. Haigler’s score on the ACT qualified him for a Duke TIP Academy Award.

Farmer's Market set for grand opening

The Pageland Farmers’ Market will have its grand opening this weekend, May 24-26. Mack Nicholson is market manager and Joey and Jimmy Mangum will be on hand to manage the market from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Bills would increase agency accountability

A bill to restructure state government (S 22) was amended and approved by the House, despite vocal opposition from some Democrats. The bill, which was approved in a vote of 91-23, would abolish the state Budget and Control Board and move most of its functions into a new Department of Administration, headed by a director appointed by the Governor.   

Price, Anderson welcomed to CCSD

The Chesterfield County School Board unanimously approved the hiring of Chris Price as the executive director of student services and Chandar Anderson as the executive director of personnel at the meeting on May 13.

Price currently is the principal at Marion Intermediate School in Marion, a position he assumed in 2012. Prior to that, Price was the principal at New Prospect Elementary School in Inman from 2006 to 2012.

Baker played three sports for PHS Tigers

This week we journey back 65 years to find this week’s “Where Are They Now?” athlete. Roger Baker graduated from Pageland High School in 1948 where he played three sports for the Purple and White clad Tigers. Baker played football three years and basketball and baseball four years each.
Baker was a member of the Block P Club, Beta Club, Literary Club and received the Griggs Football Medal and Mangum Athletic Medal his senior year. He attended and graduated from Clemson University in 1952 with a B.S. degree in textile manufacturing.

Speak out 5/21/13

“I just want to say how much I enjoy reading the Speak Out section of the Pageland Journal. It sure is entertaining to see what people have to say about. I like it how you print things just the way people say them, too, and don’t correct their bad grammar. That adds to the entertainment for me. Thank you.”

Board honors achievements, talks budget

The Chesterfield County School District board of directors met at 5:30 p.m. May 13 in the Palmetto Learning Center in Chesterfield. Using a new audio system, which through microphones and screens made listening easier for those attending, the board recognized outstanding members of the student body and community and discussed the first reading of the 2013-14 budget.
