The New Heights Middle School Hawks improved their record to 4-2

with a convincing 30-14 win over Indian Land Middle School last Thursday

evening in Pageland.

On their first two possessions the Hawks turned the ball over on

fumbles. With the Warriors on their 40, the Hawks’ Tyvonne Blakeney

intercepted a pass and raced 35 yards untouched for the game’s first

touchdown. Quan Welch added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead

with 3:38 left in the first quarter.

Taking advantage of a short Warrior punt, the Hawks took

over at Indian Land’s 26. Facing fourth down from the 16, Gary Heath

caught Welch’s touchdown pass and Blakeney added the two-point conversion to increase the lead to 16-0.

With a minute left in the first half, Welch sprinted 60 yards

for a touchdown. The PAT failed with the Hawks on top 22-0. The Warriors

returned the kickoff 55 yards for a touchdown to trim the Hawks’ lead

to 22-6 at intermission.

Each team scored a touchdown in the second half with the

Hawks’ coming on Heath’s 70-yard run. Welch made good on the

conversion. The Warriors scored with 5:00 left in the game for their

second touchdown.

Hawks’ Coach Billy Blakeney commented after the game: “Once

again the defense played a heck of a game by not allowing many points.

Timothy Hodges played his best defensive game this year. Codarius Tyson

also played outstanding on defense. They have practiced really hard and

are very hungry to win every game. I would like to thank my assistant

coaches for doing a great job with the team.”
