Efforts to rename Elm Street for Civil Rights pioneer Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will not be decided by the Pageland Town Council.
According to the town’s ordinance, the decision rests with the town’s Planning Commission, after a referendum is held.
The town’s referendum requirement, however, conflicts with state law.
Town attorney Adam Foard wants the town council to repeal the referendum provision.
