NAACP banquet speaker says simple advice influenced her career

By Vanessa Tyson

Growing up, Chesterfield native Trudy Merriman Young was told by her father, “if you don’t do something right, don’t it at all.”
Her teachers told her to she could do whatever she wanted to, as long as “she ran like Wilma.”
Much later Young understood her teachers were referring to runner Wilma Rudolph, the first American woman to win three gold medals in the Olympics.
The simple advice helped Young, a 1973 graduate of Chesterfield High, in her U.S. Air Force and civilian careers.
