The filing period to run for the Chesterfield County Board of Education opens today and ends Sept. 18 at noon.

Four seats are up for election: District 1, District 2, District 3 and District 9. The board has nine members.

Incumbents Kim Burch (District 1), Darin Coleman (District 2) Wesley Miles (District 3), and Wayne Chapman (District 9)  are running for another four-year term.

Miles, the current chairman, and Coleman said the challenges for the upcoming board will be improving the district’s financial position, its educational performance and recruiting teachers.

Keeping teachers and finding qualified new ones is a statewide challenge as there are more teacher job available in South Carolina than there are graduates, Miles said.

Coleman said the incentive the board gave to teachers early in their career this year was a good decision.

Coleman also said he was please to see continued improvement in student achievement and graduation rates. He said maintaining racial diversity in the classroom and in the front office was also important.

Miles, the director of Public Works for Pageland, is completing his two-year term as chairman. He said he may serve another term as chairman if asked. Miles has been on the School Board for 12 years.
