• Lady Eagles defeat Great Falls for first win

     After losing their first two games of the season, the Lady Eagles earned their first win Saturday with a 48-44 victory at Great Falls.  Seventh-grader Malia Rivers paced Central with 27 points, followed by Danielle Moore 15, Cherrie Thompson 4, and Candice Wright and Dearo Nivens 1 each.

    Wednesday the Lady Eagles lost their season opener at home to McBee 68-37. The Lady Panthers raced to a 33-15 halftime lead in route to the win.

    Moore led the Lady Eagles with 13 points followed by Nivens 8, Wright and Rivers 5 each, Thompson 4, and Monique Little 2.

  • Betty Ballard dies Sunday

     Betty Hinson Ballard, a longtime teacher in Chesterfield and Lancaster counties and the mother of Burnie W. Ballard, died on Sunday.

    A funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, First Baptist Church of Pageland with burial to follow at Lancaster Memorial Park. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Sutton-Baumgartner Funeral Home.

    Even in the age of Wikipedia and dictionary.com school children still need an old fashioned printed dictionary.

    Third graders in Chesterfield County are getting them, thanks to the Cheraw Rotary Club. Three club members traveled to Pageland Elementary School last week to hand out the books to appreciative children.

    Chesterfield town administrator David Huntley, Kevin Light of Hartsville and Tony Nolan of Jefferson hauled cartons of A Student’s Dictionaryto the 117 students in eight third grade classes.

      PAGELAND – Mrs. Rose Ella Plyler West, 79, died December 8, 2010.   • Chesterfield sheriff

     JEFFERSON – A 41-year-old Pageland man was charged with third-degree assault and battery after Pageland officers Jeremy Lear and Garry Deaver responded to a domestic call at 303 E. Elizabeth St. Apt. 1G at 6 p.m. on Dec. 7. The town police officers were covering for sheriff’s deputies at an office Christmas party when they answered the call about an assault. They found 24-year-old Leslie Smith in a neighbor’s apartment bleeding from a cut over her right eye. Charged with hitting her was Billy Ray Patterson of 207 Old Sutton St.
